Flava News Book Reviews

Just to tell a little something about myself as a book reviewer. Most of you know that I owned a coffee house in North Seattle for 5 years and closed her in June of 08. Through my coffee house and from my page on myspace I came in contact with several artists and this was right up my alley since I love to read. One day an author contacted me to see if I would be interested in selling her book at my coffee house. Although, I felt this particular book was not a good fit for my business, it opened the door to explore selling books out of Flava. During the time to inform this author that I did not wish to sell her book and the reasons why, I sought out the advise of my online friend Yasmin Coleman- Founder of APOOO BookClub. I wrote the letter and sent it to Yasmin for her feedback. Then there really blossomed our online friendship. One day, she put an announcement out that she was seeking new book reviews to join her team and I asked if I could apply. Yasmin welcomed me with open arms as the only non African American book reviewer on this team. I started my career with APOOO BookClub back in 2004 or so. This was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, learned so much from all of the ladies and sharing my opinions on the many many books I read for the team. I established myself through Flava as a book reviewer and book seller that I no longer needed to continue reviewing for APOOO. Authors were sending me books directly wanting me to read their books for review. The other thing I offered was, if I like a book and felt it would sell at Flava I made arranges to do so.

In 2008, I went through a heartbreaking experience due to relationships with certain people in the literary community and I just shut it down with my book reviews. I tried to read, and just couldn't do it. I was ashamed and embarrassed that I owed so many author reviews or had read the books and couldn't write the reviews. I just stopped trying and took care of me and knew that one day I would get back to doing what I love and do it even better. To do it Flava's way...

Today is that day and I am back. I am ready to get to reading all the books I have put on the shelf. So presently I am not accepting any new books for review until I am caught up on my past due reviews.

FYI...if you are wondering how I base my rating on a book...here is what I look at:

1) The book cover, does it draw my attention and make me say....Yes, I want to pick this up and find out more.
2) I thumb through the book to see the format and if is written in a way that I would be willing to read it and it won't hurt my eyes.
3) I do not read the synopsis on the back until I finish the book.
4) The the reading begins.
5) In the first chapter you have to grab me to keep my interest...if I had purchased the book and you don't grab me...I would put the book down....but if you send me your book for review then I will make my way through the whole thing.
6) One thing that grabs me in a book is that I can embrace the main characters, I love when a story draws me in as if I am a witness to it. Or if a book is more of a motivational or informative book...I look for a flow in the information given that is clear and grabs my attention and I learn and grow from what I have read. When it comes to short stories, poetry and anthologies...that strictly goes by how I receive what I have read...how the pieces move me.
7) Typographical errors or grammatical errors are an issue, but if they are few and far apart and the story has my attention, then it will not take away too much on my rating. Now if there are tons of errors, then of course it will effect the rating.
8) Refuse to read other reviews before writing my own.
9) Once I am caught up on book reviews, my goal is to read books and complete a written review within a 4 week period upon receiving the book.
10) I log in books as I receive them by dates to keep track of sequence as to to whose book is in line to be read next. I will also inform the author that I have received their book and when the projected date will be to expect a written review.

I have a rating scale that I call Flava Snaps which rage from 1 to 10 Flava Snaps. If your book is also available online such as on amazon.com or barnes&noble.com I will show my rating along with the rating for that site.

All reviews will be sent to you, the author to the email that is provided. I will also post your review to any website you would like it posted to. If by chance the rating is extremely low, I will first, out of courtesy contact you to see if you would like it posted publicly or not.

I am developing other services you can pay for around the review I do on your book. I will make a formal announcement once those services once my business plan is worked through on how I will offer and market the products.

Please feel free to read my reviews and make comments. Remember the reviews are based solely off my personal and professional opinion. I am open minded and welcome all genres of literature. I have my own style of writing reviews which shows my on personal flair which I call flava.

If you are interested or have questions regarding my reviews or interested in having me read and review your book, please feel free to contact me here at Flava News Supports The Arts.

Peace and Blessings,

Lady Flava
